Window Systems
A modular window is an encapsulated plastic unit that incorporates the window glass, weather stripping, trim bezels and mounting hardware into a single unit. Modular window designs lead to less wind noise and a smooth, flush look. In addition to the design freedom modular windows allow, car makers like the systems because they are easy to install: the entire modular window unit is ready for quick installation into the vehicle.
For several years, car makers have used Donnelly's encapsulated modular windows for fixed and movable side windows, quarter windows, fixed vent, rear and liftgate windows and sunroofs. And in 1995, Donnelly started to produce modular backlite and sliding back windows for the growing truck market.
One of Donnelly's latest technological breakthroughs is single-sided encapsulation, a process in which all of the mounting hardware and weather-sealing material is bonded to one side of the window glass. The patented process produces a smooth, aerodynamic look in which no weather stripping or mounting hardware can be seen from outside the vehicle. Late in 1995, Donnelly's single-sided encapsulation windows, used on the Chrysler minivan, won a prestigious engineering award from the Society of Plastics Engineers. Late in 1997, Donnelly announced it had entered into a joint venture, called Donnex L.L.C., that would design, market, produce and deliver complete, ready-to-install automotive window systems on a just-in-time basis. The initial Donnex operation will be based in the Detroit area.
