TH8100 - Single Chip LIN Slave IC For Intelligent Switch Modules

Source: Melexis NV
With this first member of a new generation low-cost LIN Slave ICs Melexis takes a new Step towards System Integration.

As a specialist in LIN (Local Interconnect Network) ICs, Melexis announces the introduction of a new family of IC's extending its LIN product range. This new family enables Melexis customers to reach new levels of effectiveness in LIN system integration.
The addition of this new family of completely integrated LIN slave devices extends the existing portfolio of LIN transceivers and system basis IC's.

The TH8100 – "LIN switch", member of the new IC family, is well suited for applications like switch modules for window lifters, mirror adjustment, seat adjustment, HVAC control panels as well as switch modules within the steering wheel or the dashboard. It is also possible to employ this IC as a LIN I/O controller or gateway for existing non-LIN solutions via an SPI interface.

The TH8100 is a single chip system IC that has all necessary functions for a LIN slave node monolithically integrated. This integration includes the CPU, voltage regulator, LIN transceiver and ADC. Many short-circuit protected in- and outputs are available to connect a switch matrix or single switch inputs. Multiple slew-rate controlled PWM outputs, also short circuit protected, can be directly connected to interior and dashboard lights. Different modes are provided to enable connection of an LED or incandescent lamp directly to the battery.

The IC allows network designers to make the lowest cost LIN slave nodes while retaining maximum flexibility. The basis for this integration is a dedicated LIN 4-bit dual task CPU designated by Melexis as the MLX4D.

This CPU can process two software tasks simultaneously and has the functionality of a "Real Time Operating System" (ROTS). This function is realized as a hardware implementation on a 4-bit CPU platform. The LIN protocol is processed by one task of the CPU. The necessary protocol software for TH8100 and the future generation products will be managed by Melexis. The user needs only to develop application software. Melexis offers a software library and applications support and tools that simplify this process. Implementation of protocol upgrades is made easy thanks to this separated processing of LIN protocol and application software. Presently LIN specification 1.3 is supported and the upgrade to 2.0, respectively SAEJ2602, is under development.

Combining the physical layer LIN transceiver, the LIN protocol controller, a switch matrix or single switch inputs and PWM outputs on one chip make it possible for Melexis customers to develop simple, but powerful and cheap switch slave nodes in LIN Bus systems.

Development hardware and software tools for application engineering as well as engineering samples are currently available.

This extension of the LIN product range enables Melexis customers to create customized and cost effective LIN system solutions.
