The shift-by-wire module is a new technological advancement introduced in response to the traditional method of shifting gears. Instead of a mechanical connection between gear lever and gearbox, this system is electrical, using a switch or sensor to convey the driver's command.
The gear lever is moved via electric, pneumatic or hydraulic instruction and allows for shift-force characteristics to become individually determined. As there is no acoustic coupling between the transmission and passenger compartment, the vibration or noise caused by a customary shift stick can be avoided. The steer-by-wire also renders a floor opening in the vehicle obsolete, thereby limiting potential sealing problems and improving crash characteristics. OEMs utilizing the system will be able to simplify the assembly process and after-sales service.
