At PMTS 2001, INDEX Corporation will exhibit the MS32B (Photo 1), a CNC-controlled multi spindle machine with a 32 mm / 1-1/4" DIA capacity, from the MultiLine series. In addition to proven characteristics such as 6 independent motor spindles, now programmable C-axis and Y-axis have been added. A quick-change tooling system and free chip flow, as well as a highly precise spindle drum locking via a Hirth coupling system are also part of this machine. New and innovative characteristics such as ballscrew axis drives, the use of the CNC control INDEX C200-4D and the idea of the building block system are also incorporated. The machines of the MS 32 series are available in three versions:
INDEX MS 32 B (basic, single carrier version)
INDEX MS 32 P (quill version)
INDEX MS 32 G (opposed drum version)
The MS 32 B version can be equipped with up to 10 tool carriers, 8 of which can have 2-axis contour control. The MS 32 G, as well as the MS 32 P, accommodates up to 17 tool carriers; both X-axis and Z-axis are CNC controlled. Additionally, four of these tool carriers have the optional Y-axis (Photo 2). The building block system allows workpiece specific equipment configuration, where only those tool carriers are chosen that are necessary and axis drives are used only on those tools that need to be contour controlled. On the MS 32 G version, opposite to the spindle drum with the six mainspindles, a second drum is mounted with an additional six spindles for backworking operations. The two spindle drums can be operated independently of each other or synchronously. All motor spindles are individually driven and have a drive power of 12.3 kW / 16 Hp (at 16% / 10 min. duty cycle) and a torque of 47 Nm or 34 ft. lbs. Their maximum speed is 6300 RPM. The parts are machined simultaneously on the main and counterspindle, making it possible to produce complex parts with extensive machining on the cut-off side in one operation at very high production rates using mainly standard tools.

The individually driven motor spindles guarantee optimum cutting speeds. Set-up is quick, making the MS32 series suitable for smaller batch sizes. The machines are also well suited for economical production of complex, highly precise parts in medium to high volume parts families.

The machines are equipped with the INDEX software for multi spindle automatics and the C200-4D control (which is based on Sinumerik 840 D), making programming simple and user-friendly. The software takes care of the synchronization of individual movements. Additionally, the INDEX Teleservice is available as standard.
