Bosch, Robert GmbHctronic stability program (ESP) is featured on the new Peugeot 607. ESP prevents vehicle skidding and optimizes vehicle control independent of driver behavior by monitoring all aspects of the driving situation. The system is used with Bosch's antilock brake and traction control systems and is comprised of a hydraulic Control Unit, wheel speed sensors, yaw rate and lateral acceleration sensor, steering angle sensor and master cylinder pressure sensor.

The ESP, with input from the sensors, determines the actual vehicle path and compares it to the driver's intended path. If a difference exists, the system utilizes active braking to direct the vehicle back to the intended path, providing vehicle stability. The ESP senses vehicle skids and automatically activates based on the level of braking applied by the driver. When the system intervenes to maintain vehicle control, an instrument panel indicator light alerts the driver.
