Dana Corporation's Mishawaka facility conducts Northern Indiana's first 'English For Special Purposes' training
The ESP training teaches students English as a second language. Dana's Mishawaka facility enhanced the program to include the plant's quality, safety and productivity goals. Students also learn components of the Dana Style of Management, as well as career development opportunities.
Thirty students, all full-time members of the Mishawaka facility, meet twice a week for two-hour sessions. For their final project, students are required to develop a safety manual for new hires who may have similar language skills. Upon completion of 50 hours of classroom instruction, the students graduate and receive an ESP achievement certificate.
"This course is extremely beneficial for our people," said Tim Seyler, Mishawaka plant manager. "It grows the students' confidence and understanding of the company's goals as they work on real life, continuous improvement applications. This, in turn, improves safety, productivity and morale for the participants and their co-workers, which translates into added value for our customers and shareholders."
Dana's Mishawaka Brake and Chassis facility, part of the Automotive Aftermarket Group, manufactures brake and chassis components for the automotive aftermarket industry. Approximately 400 people are employed at the plant.
