Lear Corporationation's Common Architecture Strategy makes mass customization of vehicle interiors feasible, providing the consumer with the freedom to "create" his or her own unique vehicle interior. The Strategy is based on a standardized common structure that supports the use of interchangeable, modular components built off of the same substructures.Reconfigurable items include "topper" (top portion of instrument panel), gauges, displays, console features, steering wheels, and controls for headlamps, sound system, and heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) system Common Architecture includes standardized frame, Modular Adjuster Family seat track system, ProTec Self-Aligning Head Restraint, and one-step, folding rear seats
Customized items: Seat bolsters, body cloth, belt systems, power controls, and add-on features like four-way power lumbar support Options include Lear's OASys Overhead Audio System that converts entire headliner into a speaker, flexible from console features, rear seat entertainment, Rear Vision Camera, removable combination dome lamp/first aid kit Selections include a covered map pocket, flush-mounted storage bins, removable trash bins and CD storage pocket, as well as armrest, door and window controls, and various trim options Feature choices include sports rack, flexible storage platforms that attach to anchors in the load floor or seats, extendable grocery bag hooks and various flooring materials
The ability to customized vehicle interiors could take place when the consumer initially orders a vehicle and throughout the ownership experience, with upgrades and new features.
Common Architecture across multiple classes and brands is possible, having been designed to accommodate any number of interiors.
